New York City
Several linked outdoor and indoor spaces make up Rockefeller Center. But one of its finest features, closed since 1986, is set to re-open to the public November 1. The “Top of the Rock” observatory covers six floors of the building. An unobstructed, 360-degree view of the city and its prominent landmarks are visible. “Inside CNN” at One Time Warner Center is a look at how the network produces news for broadcast. Time Warner Center is also home to “Jazz at Lincoln Center” which has just unveiled its new 35mm film and Christie high definition digital projector systems, making one of the world’s most versatile performing arts centers, an ideal location for movie screenings and events.
Catskills/Hudson Valley
Kingston, the first capital of New York, is home to the Hudson River Maritime Museum, the only site dedicated exclusively to the history and preservation of the Hudson River and the industries it spawned. In the mid-1800s wealthy New York businessmen bought property on the lush banks of the Hudson River for summer retreats. Known as “Millionaires Row,” magnificent estates once occupied by Rockefellers and Vanderbilts are open to tour. In Tarrytown, check out “Sunnyside,” home of author Washington Irving.
Capital-Saratoga
Local tourism officials sum up Saratoga Springs in three words, “health, history and horses.” Built in 1863, the historic Saratoga Race Course is the oldest thoroughbred flat track in the country. Across the street from the track is the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. Long before horses dominated the Saratoga scene, there were the springs. More than 50 of them, warm mineral fountains bubbling up from the earth, are found around town.
The heaviest concentration is in Saratoga Spa State Park – a park seeming fit for royalty. The place to soak in the park is at the Roosevelt Baths of the Gideon Putnam Resort. A stunning example of 19th century architecture, thirty years in the making, the state capital in Albany is one of the most spectacular capitals in the nation. Conclude with a stop at the Corning Tower Observation Deck.
The Adirondacks and the Thousand Islands Seaway
In 1882 forward-thinking New York State legislators designated 6.1 million acres of state wilderness as the Adirondack State Park. Lake Placid has a charming Main Street, lined with numerous shops and eclectic dining spots. Groups wanting a luxurious lodging experience can check into the Mirror Lake Inn & Spa. The traditional inn on the lakeshore has all the amenities of a modern resort
