Wedding cakes are something that is hard for most people to figure out just how much they’re supposed to cost. The main reason is because most of us have made a cake at home, and bought a box of cake mix that might have cost us $2.50, plus a few other ingredients needed to make that cake. You can pretty much be thankful that your wedding cake probably won’t cost you anywhere near $1.3 million. At the same time, you’re not getting a wedding cake that’s supposed to feed a lot of people for around $10 either. The cake mixes we buy to eat at home are much different than the ingredients real bakers use. Real bakers make their cakes from scratch, not a mix. They use milk or cream rather than water. They have pans that most of us don’t have so that they can either design spectacular cakes or make super large sheet cakes that can feed a lot of people. They use a much different kind of frosting and icing, and with multiple colors. All that, plus they deserve to be paid for their time. How do you determine how much a cake should cost? First, if you have a favorite bakery, cost shouldn’t matter. If not, then start at a rate of $1 per piece of cake and work your way down. For instance, if you’re having 100 people at your wedding, paying $100 for your cake isn’t exorbitant. Once you get up closer to 200 people, however, your cake probably won’t cost $200 unless you start looking for something fancy. If you’re looking for style, all bets are off as far as price. At that point you’re looking for a designer, and the focus moves away from the cake to the look of the cake. One designer I know makes her own fondant as opposed to buying it pre-made, thus it costs a little bit more for her cakes than it might for another baker. Whatever you decide on, make sure you get the opportunity to taste some samples, for free, before you make your decision. The look makes little difference if the taste can’t sell the cake on the back end.
